A problem arises when it’s difficult to differentiate between hair myths and hair facts. There is an endless supply of myths and stories surrounding the topic of caring for your hair follicles. Some of these beliefs and suggestions can harm your hair and make it worse.

These rules, passed down by our grannies or reinforced by the world, dictate our hair care, or we suffer strands of poor quality. There are a number of unusual solutions to lengthening, thickening, and shinier hair that are said to work. 

Are these things true, or are they just scare tactics? The hair industry is chock-full of products, tools, and information, so let’s dispel the myths.

#1 Brushing the hair at least 100 times a day will make it healthier

This is one of the most common myths about hair care and it’s also one of the most damaging. If you’re brushing your hair 100 times a day, you’re doing damage to it. You might think that brushing your hair 100 times will make it healthier and shinier, but in reality, this will damage your strands and make them more prone to breakage.

Brushing too much can cause static electricity which will cause your hair to look dirty more quickly. To keep your tresses looking their best, try paying attention to how often you brush them, and opt for a wide-tooth comb when possible. This will help prevent breakage while giving you an overall hair healthy appearance.

#2 You should always wash your hair before you go to bed

Frequent washing of your hair right before bed is not the best idea because you’ll just be sleeping on it and making it even oilier than it already is — especially if you’re sleeping with a lot of product in it! 

It’s better to wash your tresses in the morning so that you can let them dry naturally, which will prevent them from getting as oily during the night as they would if you were washing them at night. Plus, this will give you more time throughout the day so that you don’t have to rush through other things.

#3 You should wash your hair with cold water

This myth is one that causes many people to have very dry hair strands because they think that washing their strands with cold water will make them healthier. However, this isn’t true at all! 

The best way to wash your hair shaft is with warm water so that the shampoo can easily dissolve and it can also be easier on your hair and scalp. Using cold water will make your strands more susceptible to breakage and it can even make your scalp drier than it already is! 

It’s best to wash your locks using warm or lukewarm water, depending on what works for you personally.

#4 You should always be using a leave-in conditioner

If you happen to have curly locks and you want them to look as healthy as possible, it’s okay for you to use a leave-in conditioner.

Leave-in conditioners are great for anyone who wants their locks to look shiny and healthy; however, if you’re using one too often or too much of a time, this could be very damaging to your strands and it can even make your hair look limp or hair texture greasy! If you’re someone who has straight locks or if you have naturally dry hair, it might not be necessary for you to use these products every day.

#5 You should only use one type of product in your hair

If you’re someone who has curly locks, it may be necessary for you to use more than one type of product in order to get the best results out of deep conditioning treatments. If this is the case for you, then do not worry about using more than one product because this won’t cause any damage!

If you’re someone who has straight strands or if your hair isn’t very damaged or dry, then only using one deep conditioner may be all that’s necessary for your needs.

#6 All products are created equal

Just like with many other products that we buy, there are some hair care products that work better than others.

If you’re someone who has straight strands, it’s okay for you to use a leave-in conditioner or a deep conditioner from a drugstore; however, if you have curly locks, then it may be necessary for you to use a product from a salon in order to get the best results out of your hair. 

If you’re someone who has naturally dry hair or if your locks are really damaged, then using a product from any store may not be the best idea because these products might not be as effective on your strands as they could potentially be on someone else’s!

#7 Cutting your hair can help it grow faster and longer.

While this is true to some degree, it’s not true for everyone. If you have fine or thin strands, then cutting your hair can actually make it grow slower because it can cause breakage if you don’t take care of your tresses properly. 

Cutting your hair can also make it grow faster and longer if you’re someone who has thick and coarse strands because they are often easier to maintain and keep healthy than thin strands.

#8 Stress or fear can make you go grey overnight. 

A story like this has been passed down for years. The truth is that if you worry about going grey, then it’s possible for your grey hair to grow faster; however, there are no scientific studies that have proven this to be true. 

If you’re someone who has a lot of stress in their life and/or fear, then they can actually cause your hair follicle to go grey faster. They won’t make it go grey overnight though!

#9 Dandruff means you have a dry scalp. 

Dandruff is a red flag for inflammation, not dryness. Flaking can be triggered by conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. 

Seborrheic dermatitis is the leading cause of dandruff, and this condition is caused by an outbreak of inflammation and a yeast infection, however, stress, medication, and a variety of medical conditions can also cause dandruff. 

Try using a shampoo with anti-dandruff properties to get rid of flakes. You must lather your hair well and leave it on for at least five minutes for the solution to take effect. If that doesn’t help, visit a dermatologist.

#10 Pulling Grey Hairs Makes Them Grow Back Darker.

This is a hair myth! Pulling grey hairs to make them grow back darker is actually a myth. 

If you pull out the grey hairs from your hair, then they will automatically fall out and not grow back. Pulling out the grey or white hairs from your hair can actually cause a lot of damage to your hair and lead to more breakage. 

If you want your grey hairs to grow back darker, then you should let them grow back naturally rather than pulling them out.

#11 Split ends can be repaired 

Split ends can be repaired but it’s not an easy process and it takes a lot of time.

There are many different ways to repair split ends and there are many different products out there that claim to be able to repair split ends quickly, however, there is no scientific evidence that proves that these products actually work! 

If you have split ends, then it’s best to leave them alone and let them grow out naturally as they will only get worse over time.

#12 Wearing hats can cause hair loss

As with wearing a hat, a person’s hair can be pulled if they put anything on top of their head. You can also get scalp infections if your hat isn’t kept clean. Keeping the hat clean and washing your hair is important. You should also check that the hat is not too snug.
